16kms of Roadways Completed

Oro Nickel

Where there is will it can be done! The team has put in a major effort to restore old roadways and create new access from Kokoda Airport to our Rati Camp. The roadways take a different and slightly longer route than the walking tracks used in 2011. Over 2,000 man days have been spent on labour to create this new access which will soon enable 4wd access to the Rati Camp.

The roadways we have established are 5 metres wide closer to the airport increasing to up to 10 metres width through the denser forest towards Rati Camp. This might be the opposite to what you expect but we have chosen the extra width in the higher and more difficult terrain to enable more sunlight which helps to keep the roadways dry.

The last 6kms of roadways to get onto the plateau is 5 metres wide and will be completed by July. Still needed is a little bit of grading and gravelling which is being scheduled.
